About the event
Description:
Through this class, participants will learn how to create an ikebana arrangement in the moribana style with two or more kenzans. A kenzan (in the US commonly known as a pin frog/ spiky frog) is a needle point holder in which the plant materials are stuck into at various angles. When arranging, the kenzans can be placed in any position inside a low, shallow container called a suiban. Materials will be placed on both kenzans. Work on both kenzans simultaneously so that harmony can be achieved together. Good harmony is generated when the space created by each group is well-balanced. Keep in mind shin (the first main stem), soe (the second main stem), and hikae (the third main stem) to help you make an appealing arrangement. One of the primary goals is to pay attention to the space between the two groups, or kabu. Creating artistic tension between the space will yield a dynamic arrangement. It is also important to show the water in between the groups. As this style has separate kabu, it is called Kabuwake and is characterized by the water shown between the two groups. At the end, neatly cover the kenzans so that they are hidden from view and experiment with sliding the kenzans to find their most well-balanced positions and angles.
• All materials, tools, and containers are supplied and the participants do not need to bring anything to the class. However, a participant may choose to bring their own container if they wish.
• Class will be held at Yanagi Botanic Arts Studio located inside Yobel/ The Look Up Gallery building.
•Reference photo shows an example of the arrangement that will be created and the materials used may differ in the actual class.
