About the event

Through this class, participants will learn how to create an ikebana arrangement with mass and line.  Mass is defined as a coherent quantity of matter usually of considerable size.  First assemble your mass expression, then insert your line(s).

When assembling, try to express the inner power of the mass by creating an unique shape.  Wire multiple bundles of material together to build your mass; insert at various heights and angles.  It is best to use a variety of material such as flowers, leaves, and/or branches for mass vs. one uniform material.  Also, composing mass of different colors, and textures adds more variations and depth to the volume of the arrangement.  When finished, a densely assembled mass should not be see-through.

Next, insert a line into the mass; think about creating an arrangement where mass and line are contrasting elements.  One of the basic principles of thinking about ikebana is viewing the plants as lines.  Lines can be straight or curved and can be multiple lines if desired.  Straight lines can be arranged with a certain rhythm or extending their spread.  Curved lines can express the sense of rhythm, the volume, the swirling lines of flow, motion, the feeling of energy,……. Pick either a straight or curved line(s) for your mass and insert into the container.  Mass and Line can be interesting and powerful if given the right expression; find the best use of materials and enjoy arranging.

• There are two ticket options for this class: purchase a container for class or bring your own container. Please choose the option that works best for you.

• Class will be held at Yanagi Botanic Arts Studio located inside Yobel/ The Look Up Gallery building.
