About the event
Through this class, participants will learn moribana which means “piled up flowers” and is always arranged in a shallow container. The container can be any shape, but needs to be arranged in a shallow, low container with a flat surface which is often referred to as a suiban. Moribana seeks to emphasize the natural aspect and favors a complete freedom of choice in terms of materials. There are multiple variations for moribana; participants will learn the basic upright style which is the beginning lesson for moribana. Hasami (shears/scissors) will be used to cut the plant materials and insert into the kenzan. A kenzan (in the US commonly known as a pin frog/ spiky frog) is used for this style of ikebana. A kenzan is a needle point holder in which the plant materials are stuck into at various angles. The word kenzan literally translates to “sword mountain”.
• All materials, tools, and containers are supplied and the participants do not need to bring anything to the class.
• Class will be held at Yanagi Botanic Arts Studio located inside Yobel/ The Look Up Gallery building.
[Reference photo shows an example of the arrangement that will be created and the materials used may differ in the actual class.]
